Magris, Claudio

(1939–)
An Italian essayist, poet, translator, and scholar of modern German literature, Magris has significantly influenced the outlook of Austrian intellectuals on their past. First published in Italian in 1963, The Habsburg Myth in Austrian Literature (Der habsburgische Mythos in der österreichischen Literatur) appeared in German translation in 1966. Magris criticized what he saw to be the idealized version of the pre–World War I empire held by such writers as Hugo von Hofmannsthal. He took a negative view of Austrian cultural tradition in general, holding it responsible for the entrapment of its representatives in, at best, a societal status quo, and, at worst, a moral vacuum. Magris has had a very strong influence on two major Austrian literary movements since 1945, the Graz Group and the Vienna Group.
